Mojave Road update 2-23

Post by Jim_b »

September 12, sections of the Preserve received over an inch of rainfall. This has created standing water on, the normally dry, Soda Lake. This newest monsoonal rain has again caused damage to parts of Zzyzx Road as well as making The Mojave Road between Rasor and Kelbaker Road impassable. While from a distance it may not look dangerous, off-road vehicles are cautioned away from this area as driving on muddy roads can cause irreparable damage to sensitive areas and may result in your vehicle becoming stuck. Any vehicles requiring extraction from Soda Lake may cost drivers up to $3000.

Recent drier weather in early February 2023 for the Mojave National Preserve area has meant that the road conditions are now suitable for well-prepared and equipped four-wheel drive vehicles to traverse the Soda Lake portion of the Mojave Road.
