With the Winter Solstice Sunset at its most southern point to coincide with a full moonrise not happening again until 2094 I hiked to the summit of the highest mountain in Death Valley National Park, Telescope Peak, elevation 11,043 feet to capture the event. Fortunately there was only a skiff or two of snow and ice.
As the sun set over the Argus Mountain Range in the west the full moon rose over the Funeral Mountain Range and the Furnace Creek Visitors Center to the east. Here is the scene unfolding.
For contrast here is The June 2016 Summer Solstice sunrise over the Funerals coinciding with the full moonset over the Argus from Telescope Peak.
