Stop the Towers Hootenanny
The California Desert Coalition (CDC) will be holding a benefit dinner and silent auction at historic Pappy & Harriet’s Palace in Pioneertown on June 13, 2009, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Stop the Towers Hootenanny will feature a buffet dinner, great music, no host bar and the opportunity to bid on silent auction items. This festive evening of fun and camaraderie promises to be a real “hoot” and will offer us all the opportunity to hear about the latest progress being made to stop the proposed 500kV power corridor through the Morongo Basin and surrounding communities, including Pioneertown, within sight of Pappy & Harriet’s Palace.
Tickets are $50.00 per person and are going fast – reserve by June 5th! Tickets are available online at cadesertco.org, by calling MJ (760) 217-2130 and at the Joshua Tree Farmer’s Market on May 16, 23 and 30.
Valuable items from local businesses, artists and individuals have been pledged, and more are needed for the auction. Any items big or small are very welcome and all tax-deductible donations will be acknowledged at the party. To give to the auction, call Carol (760) 228-2811.

"The city of Los Angeles moved one step closer this afternoon to scrapping plans for a giant electrical transmission system across the desert and forest, according to a Bureau of Land Management official.
Mark Sedlacek, director of environmental services for the city's Department of Water and Power, called the bureau's Palm Springs office to say he will fax a request tomorrow to withdraw DWP's application for the transmission line, said Holly Roberts, a BLM associate field manager.
The utility also will terminate the memorandum of understanding it had with the BLM and U.S. Forest Service to build the power lines, called Green Path North. The system would have moved geothermal, wind and solar energy from Imperial County near the Salton Sea to Los Angeles.
The move comes on the eve of two celebrations, in Oak Glen and Yucca Valley, to mark the announcement that DWP is dropping Green Path North. The events were organized by The Wildlands Conservancy in Oak Glen and the California Desert Coalition, which both fought the project."

Power lines provide artificial nesting perches for ravens, and invasive plant species compete for scarce resources and fuel fires that destroy the habitat. Diseases, such as upper respiratory tract disease, have also played a major role in tortoise declines."

One thing you have to admit - it is a tough choice to make - green energy (windmills and solar) are much more environmentally friendly than nuclear, oil, kerosene and propane. However, it takes room to install. So, we eat up all the fossil fuels, crud up the air with pollutants and say its ok, because we still have the habitat. (though eventually, they will die from the bad air and pollution and/or nuclear accidents and storage of toxic waste), and so will we.
Its not really an easy thing to manage, nor an easy choice to make, is it?
When should we start killing off all the crows that are eating tortise eggs (the real reason for the drop in population)?
Maybe a bounty on them, like there used to be?

I employed my own solution and installed a solar system on my home that provides all of my energy needs right here at the site where I need it. No fuss no muss, and I OWN IT.

Welcome to the club Kevin. Up here, we are off the grid so it's all self generated power and water. I'm getting ready to sink a second well with a solar pumping system. The plan is to pump with solar energy , then gravity flow down hill and put all the trees on a drip system. The Green Path North was slated to cross very close if not straight across my land out here and it's a relief that LADWP is exploring some very good alternatives using existing power lines and previously disturbed lands that they already own for their projects. Green Path North would have carried electricity from geothermal, wind and solar sources 80 miles from Imperial County to Los Angeles, crossing nature reserves and other pristine public land.
