desert town to stop subsidizing Off-roaders

ADELANTO • This weekend’s 30th annual Adelanto Grand Prix will be the last, organizers announced early Monday.

“After 29 years of sun, rain, snow, dust, mud (lots of it), and a great relationship with the city of Adelanto, the Sheriff’s Department, the Fire Department, the Chamber of Commerce, our faithful vendors and most of all, the wonderful racers and fans, the Desert Vipers Motorcycle Club has decided to announce an end to the wonderful event we all know as the Adelanto Grand Prix,” reads a statement by Desert Vipers organizer Larry Engwall.

Over the past three decades the Grand Prix, one of the largest off road racing events in North America, has drawn thousands of spectators and racers, sometimes doubling the population of Adelanto for the weekend.

But last year as the Adelanto City Council reviewed its tight budget, city officials considered halting its $30,000 to $50,000 subsidies toward the event for public safety and promotional support. City Manager Jim Hart said that though the event has given the city some name recognition, it hasn’t generated much outside revenue, with most spectators setting up their camp sites near the race course and not spending much at city eateries or hotels.

In late January Engwall told the Daily Press the Desert Vipers were working with city leaders on ways to trim costs and possibly sustain the annual event for 2011 and beyond. They managed to run this weekend’s event on a budget about $20,000 less than last year, Engwall said.

But on Monday, Engwall announced the final decision to pull the longtime event out of the city, with no word yet on where they’re looking to relocate.

“It’s a bittersweet moment for our club, one that many of us could never have imagined several years ago when the race was in its heyday,” the statement reads. “But the Great Recession has taken its toll on many good people, companies and events, and this race will now be one of them. It has become such a struggle to make ends meet that we felt we were losing too many of the great qualities that made this race such an event to be proud of.”

That may be more than Sal---DELETED--- can understand. No doubt, he feels that the race is ending because the locals don't like it, or perhaps it was ended to benefit the Tortoise and the Ravens and to help promote Healthly Upper Respiratory Disease (HURD) .

The bottom line is in the city budget. There is an alternative for those into racing motorcycles. AMA D37 holds races out in the designated OHV areas on a regular basis. In my opinion, that is the appropriate venue for such activity.

The Adelanto grand prix is a small scale motorcycle version of the Long Beach Grand Prix. Do you think that the Long Beach Grand Prix style of racing should only be held on designated race courses and not on public streets?

The Adelanto GP was motorized mayhem on city streets, with onlookers and hangers on making their own worm tracks, jumps etc on any visible land. Riders terrorized locals and their pets...after years of protest by residents this gift of taxpayer dollars has ended.

Com on SAL...Deleted.... You're saying the spectators went out and build jumps and tracks during the race? Must have been thoses thugs from down the hill. I'm sure SAL...Deleted...you have a number of . . . what? Maybe newspaper articles, surely you have pix of these thugs out riding roughshod over hill and dale and Granny Mae's cat.
