Collecting Arizona/Book

Post by roc2rol »

From its earliest days as a territory when prospectors searched for gold and silver to the giant copper camps of the twentieth century to today when Tucson is a mecca for mineral collectors worldwide, the historical fabric of Arizona is woven with minerals. The book endeavors to provide a sense of the people, places, and times that spawned the state's mineral discoveries. It begins with a geologic overview, but the story is more a history than a scientific treatise and is divided into chapters, each covering a distinct era beginning with the pre-Territorial period when missionaries, soldiers, and prospectors made the earliest inroads into the uncharted Pimería Alta, which would become southern Arizona. Collecting Arizona is a Centennial tribute to the state's legacy of mineral specimens; to those who spent time digging, documenting, and preserving that legacy; and to the great State of Arizona, which is built on its minerals and its mines.

I just wanted to mention that I have this book Its newly published .
This is large hardcover fully illustrated with beautiful photos.
The book is geared toward the mineral collector but I would think the history
of mining & general locations of these mines would be of interest to this board
It seems every mine is extensively covered with insightful histories,
and general locations of these mineralized areas

Ed,

Could you make a heart out of a meteorite? (hardness being the major question)

That would be a heart from the heavens, Beth!
Would revel in doing one. But the rarity and price of the meteor
well lets just say it would tax all my skills to do it.

To give you some idea of what can be done with a meteor
Its a knife with piece of meteor embedded in the knife blade
Excellent!

Adrian is an rock pal associate of mine that lives in Romania
I've never personally met him although he as visited the States
The man in my estimation is master of the crafts
He as inspired me in my lapidary endeavors.
This is knife that fell from the heavens
And is killer piece of work.

Beth Roy

Are you guys anywhere near Fairburn, South Dakota ?
Ever do any prospecting around that area ?
The agates from that area are a hot commodity !
Maybe you have a source?

Beautiful, Ed - that's quite a piece.

Yes, we are pretty close to Fairburn, and we have poked around, but, those agates are hard to find - they look like nothing on the ground!!

Hold your thoughts on the meteorite, though - because I have a few, and I am trying to decide what I want to do with them - it will depend on how many I can certify. But, when done - I sure would like to see what you could do with one. So, if you like, when we get them all tested, etc., I'll have to get your address and send you one.

They are so hard, I've got to think it would be a challenge - but end up a beautiful piece.

:D

Your exactly right, Beth
agates are difficult to detect

I've gotten pretty proficient
from the lapidary work
at telling if a rock is agatized inside

look at enough rocks
& they start looking back at ya

another quick question
have you two ever attended
Quartzite Annual Rock Show
That coming up in January

Thanks
Ed
