Barn Owls - "Owlets"
"Owlets," young barn owls, are covered with snow-white down which is gradually replaced by buff-colored down as they grow. Both parents are busy night after night catching unbelievable numbers of small ground creatures to feed their ravenous babies.
Desert
Pupfish
The rare Desert Pupfish has a unique ability to survive in water
from near-freezing temperatures to almost 108 degrees Farenheit, and in salinity
from almost no salt to twice that of sea water. Growing to only about two and
a half inches in length, they are only found in the Anza Borrego Desert State
Park and nearby Salton Sea.
Hummingbirds Getting Started
The black-chinned hummingbird weighs 3 to 3.5 grams, about the equivalent of the weight of a dime plus a dollar bill. After mating, the female hummingbird builds a tiny nest woven from the webs of spiders, down from plant seeds and hairs of hirsute leaves.
The Turkey Vulture
The Turkey Vulture is one of America's largest
birds of prey. It reaches a length of 32 inches with a wing span of
6 feet. They most commonly feed on
dead animal carcasses, and are protected
from disease by a very sophisticated
immune system.
