Height: 1-20 inches
Description: This plant is variable in morphology, taking several forms. In general it is an annual herb with a thin stem 3 to 50 centimeters long, growing upright or decumbent. In texture it is hairy and sometimes slimy. The tubular base of the flower is encapsulated in a hairy calyx of sepals with pointed lobes. The corolla of the flower is yellow and up to 1.5 cm long.
Leaf: The oppositely arranged leaves vary in size and shape, from lanceolate to egg-shaped.
Range: California Floristic Province (especially c&s Sierra Nevada Foothills), White and Inyo Mountains, Desert Mountains (Panamint Mtns)
Habitat: Crevices, seeps around granite outcrops, near streams
Elevation: < 2500 m.
Flowering time: Apr–Jul
Notes: Mimulus floribundus is a dicot that is native to California and is also found elsewhere in North America and beyond. Distribution outside California: to British Columbia, South Dakota, n Mexico. This photo was taken on April 25, 2006 in Kern County, California.
