The Anza-Borrego Desert Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was held under sunny skies on December 15, 2013, with 74 participants recording 119 species and 13,271 total birds. In comparison, all-time high figures were 134 species in 2010 and 14,140 total birds in 2009. This year’s honors for “coolest rare bird” goes to two INCA DOVES from two separate locations. This species has only been recorded here seven previous times, and only once before on the CBC. Two WOOD DUCKS, a PLUMBEOUS VIREO, two TOWNSEND’S WARBLERS and a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE were also unusual.
