On Saturday morning be sure to come out and enjoy the Parade through town at 10:00 AM to see the lively marching bands, floats, decorated golf carts, equestrian groups and more! Rider South will be in the 10 a.m. parade riding in a 1927 Model T – the same type of vehicle that his father regularly drove between Ghost Mountain and Julian when the family lived on Ghost Mountain. The vehicle will be part of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park contingent in the parade.
Eighty years ago, Marshal and Tanya South began a journey to reconnect with the earth and prove that life did not have to be constrained by society’s conventions and harried routines. In their 17-year sojourn on Ghost Mountain, three children were born – Rider, Rudyard, and Victoria. Their experiment in primitive living was chronicled by Marshal South in monthly articles written for Desert Magazine over a nine year period. His articles were the most popular feature of the magazine. Rider South, the oldest child, was 13 years old when Tanya and the children left Ghost Mountain in 1947.
Rider South will be making a rare appearance at the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center on Saturday night, October 26, during the Borrego Days Desert Festival. He will talk about his father Marshal South as a writer and artist, recall his days growing up on Ghost Mountain, and answer pre-submitted questions from those attending.
