Due to extreme fire danger, Big Bend National Park has closed 11 backpacking sites in the Chisos Mountains.  Starting on May 1, the Juniper Flats, Boulder Meadows, and Pinnacles campsites will be closed until further notice.  The trail remains open to hiking. These preemptive closures are provided for within the park’s existing Fire Management Plan

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, Twentynine Palms, California – 76 year old, Joshua Tree resident, David Sewell was found alive by searchers around 11am Tuesday morning. Sewell, who had entered the park on Saturday morning to hike in the Johnny Lang Canyon area of the park, was conscious and talking when searchers made contact with him.

A search is currently underway for a 76-year-old, white, male. His vehicle was found at the Quail Springs Day Use Area parking lot. Joshua Tree resident, David Sewell appears to have left the Quail Springs parking lot headed for an unspecified location in Johnny Lang Canyon. Rangers found his abandoned vehicle around 8 pm Saturday evening.
