Discover the Beauty of the Desert Lily

Queen of the Desert

Located in Southern California, Anza Borrego Desert State Park welcomes you to explore. You can marvel at the breathtaking natural beauty of the park, including the vibrant wildflowers that have been blooming since this past October! Among the many wildflowers in the park, the Desert Lily (Hesperocallis undulata) stands out with its delicate white petals and tall stem.

Springtime in Anza Borrego Desert State Park brings the stunning bloom of the Desert Lily, typically between March and April. This year, however, blooms have been spotted as early as this past December! This native wildflower not only adds to the park’s beauty but also plays an important role in the ecosystem by providing food and habitat for various species such as pollinators, insects, and small mammals.

I spotted several blooms in an area only reachable by high clearance 4×4. The area was so full of flowers, you had to take care to not step on one! Some of the Lilies were quite large with several leaves and blooms. I even nicknamed one particular speciman, Monster Lily. Then, I decided, later on, to rename it Lily-Zilla. I pulled my camp chair out of the back of my Jeep, grabbed a beverage, and sat down to savor this incredible view.

You too can experience the beauty of the Desert Lily by taking a hike through the park’s trails. Popular trails/areas for viewing the wildflowers include Henderson Canyon, Rockhouse Canyon, June Wash, and various areas in the badlands. Get ready for a moderate hike and enjoy the breathtaking views. The reward is worth it.

Note that the timing of the wildflower bloom may vary each year due to weather conditions and rainfall. Check the Anza Borrego Desert State Park website and social media posts for the latest updates on the best time to visit and witness the bloom.
