Twentynine Palms, CA — On November 9, 2014, at approximately 11:30 am, Joshua Tree rangers were notified that a climber needed assistance. David Mazal of Bishop, CA, was climbing the Gem route of the Conan’s Corridor climb in the vicinity of Jumbo Rocks Campground. While belaying for another climber, Mazal fell approximately eight feet and slammed into a rock face, resulting in a dislocated hip.
Members of Joshua Tree Search and Rescue (JOSAR), Morongo Basin Ambulance service personnel, and Joshua Tree rangers responded to the incident. Mazal was located in a tight spot, necessitating a slow extrication and twenty-foot climb, followed by evacuation via litter to Park Boulevard. Morongo Basin Ambulance then transported Mazal to Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree for treatment.
