Even in the middle of Summer, many people hike at the top of the La Quinta Cove, usually starting about sunrise.  It doesn’t get too hot until 10am, at least that is when I would be off the trail!  I usually like to start about 5:30-6:00am, and am done by 9:00am at the latest.

I prefer using camel-back type backpacks with a good capacity water bladder, mine is 100 oz.  I also take fresh fruit and/or a PBJ along too.  I always have a couple of extra Cliff bars in my pack, just in case.  If you are hiking in the desert in the Summer, go early, have more than enough water and food for energy because you don’t want to get shaky–you are speeding up your metabolism!

  1. You got some great shots! It is hard to capture photos of wildlife in the desert. They are usually only out early in the morning or late in the day.
