Lake Mead News: Boulder Beach Fishing Pier Closed and Planned Burns

BOULDER BEACH FISHING PIER TEMPORARILY CLOSED

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The fishing pier located at Boulder Beach has been temporarily removed from Lake Mead because recent vandalism has made it unsafe for visitors.

Multiple portions of the railing are missing and there is a hole in the deck caused by a hot barbecue grill grate. Damages are estimated at around $6,000.

The pier is a popular destination for anglers at Lake Mead. Park employees are working to repair the damages and hope to be able to return the pier to the water before Memorial Day weekend.

The fishing piers at Willow Beach and Katherine Landing remain open. Fishing is also allowed from shorelines or boats. Popular fish found at Lake Mead National Recreation Area include largemouth bass, rainbow trout, striped bass, black crappie, channel catfish and bluegill.

PRESCRIBED BURNS PLANNED AT LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Lake Mead National Recreation Area Fire Management Team will conduct two prescribed burns within the next two weeks to restore the landscape to a natural state and to reduce wildfire hazards.

One burn will be implemented in a 5-acre area east of Cottonwood Cove in Arizona. The second burn will be in a 2-acre area near Las Vegas Bay.

The dates of the burns will be dependent on weather conditions, but they will be conducted during the work week when park visitation is at lower levels. Smoke impacts should be minimal, and no closures are required.

If visitors observe burn operations, they should remain 200 feet away. Fire personnel will be on site to monitor the burns.
