Subject here EMERGENCY PARTIAL PARK CLOSURE

Navajo National Monument— Acting Superintendent Lloyd Masayumptewa just announced that Navajo Tribe Utility Authority (NTUA) will be in the park today, August 16, 2011, to replace an existing power pole that may cause the electricity and telephone services to be shut off.

This emergency partial closing is sudden so there will be Park Rangers on site to assist visitors with options of walking the front country trails. Unfortunately, the 10:00 a.m. tour to Betatakin has been cancelled. Sunset View campground will remain open for those who want to enjoy their stay with us a little longer or just to enjoy a picnic. Keep in mind that once the electricity is shut off, toilets at the visitor center and Sunset View campground will be closed. Travel on park road will be open to local residents only.

“I am very confident that NTUA will have all the work completed by 5:30 p.m. so that we can reopen the visitor center for our visitors on August 17, 2011.” said Masayumptewa. “We ask that our visitors plan their visit accordingly and to thank them for their patience and understanding during this critical time in our operations here at Navajo National Monument.”
