The Alabama Hills Stewardship Group will host the first “Alabama Hills Day” on Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lone Pine Museum of Film History.

“The purpose of this new annual event is to celebrate this incredibly scenic landscape and educate the public about the wide variety of groups that use and enjoy with the Alabamas,” said Chris Langley, stewardship group chair. “Admission is free. Bring your family and friends to show your support for the Alabama Hills and enjoy a unique learning experience.”

The Alabama Hills includes almost 30,000 acres west of Lone Pine managed by the Bureau of Land Management’s Bishop Field Office.

Twenty to 30 user groups will have exhibits at the film museum, 701 Main St., to promote their activities and use of the Alabama Hills. The museum will also host a variety of exhibits, films and information tables. Corresponding field trips and self-guided tours will also take place in the Alabama Hills.

KIBS radio will be on-hand from 10 a.m. to noon to do a live remote broadcast and interviews.

There will be updates on the progress of local efforts to designate the Alabama Hills a National Scenic Area and the transition of the Alabama Hills Stewardship Group to a broader based 501c3 non-profit/tax-exempt public-benefit corporation.

“The stewardship group is committed to partnering with the BLM to protect the jaw-dropping beauty of this semi-primitive landscape while providing access for such diverse groups as hikers, motorists, photographers, rock climbers, campers and fisherman, as well as allowing important economic activities like commercial filming, cattle grazing and hunting to continue,” he said.
