Westerndigs.org reported today that an immense trove of ancient artifacts had been discovered at 29 Palms Marine Base.
“One … site by the lava blister … turned up artifacts spanning 9,800 years.” Previously an obsidian flake of the Clovis type had been found; it has been estimated to be 9,000 to 11,700 years old.
The site reports that the artifacts date from a time when the population is thought to have decreased in the Northern Great Basin.
“This raises questions about whether ancient hunter-gatherers migrated from the colder, drier northern Great Basin to what’s now the Mojave Desert, beginning around 7,000 years ago.”
The archaeologists who made the discovery have proposed the sites be placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
