Note: Spring is one of the most beautiful times of the year in the desert, but it can also be a time for caution. Rattlesnakes lie dormant during the cold fall and winter months and awaken from hibernation in the warm months of March and April. Another reason to stay on the trails. More…
2025 Yuma and Tucson Az Wildflowers Locations and Pictures
March 3, 2025, Saguaro Natl Pk Reports: You have probably noticed that Tucson and the park is very dry this spring. Officially, according to the National Weather Service, drought conditions in southeast Arizona are continuing to slowly deteriorate, with the entire area under either Severe or Extreme drought conditions. To learn more, see the local National Weather Service Drought Page. Saguaro National Park is also in High Fire Danger right now, which is very unusual for this time of year. Please be fire-safe both at the park and at home!
In addition to the lack of rain, temperatures have been way above average for most of the past summer, fall, and winter months, which is drying out the park’s streams and soils. While we all enjoy Tucson’s sunshine, we also hope it will rain soon! If it doesn’t, there won’t be many wildflowers this spring, fewer wildlife, and dying plants.
Feb 15, 2025, Organ Pipe Cactus Natl. Mon. Reports: It has been a historically dry winter here in the Sonoran Desert, where the cool seasonal rains have been few and far between. During unexpected drought periods, those consistent water sources in the desert become all the more important.
Here at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, just two natural water sources are present year-round. Quitobaquito Springs, or A’al Vaipia, is an ancient oasis hosting three endangered species, dozens upon dozens of migratory birds, and other desert wildlife.

Photos tips: Most digital point-and-shoot cameras have a macro function – usually symbolized by the icon of a little flower. When you turn on that function, you allow your camera to get closer to the subject, looking into a flower for example. Or getting up close and personal with a bug. More on desert photography.
