DesertUSA 2026 Wildflower Season Outlook
Early Signs Point to a Much Better Year
A strong November storm system has delivered widespread rainfall across the California deserts, giving the 2026 wildflower season a promising early start. Nearly every major desert region—from Anza-Borrego to Death Valley—received measurable rain over the last several days. These early-season storms help moisten the soil, activate the seed bank, and create the first conditions needed for a solid bloom, especially if the pattern continues through December, January, and February.
Highlights by Region
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park: Light but steady rain over several days (about 0.30”) has primed the lower washes and badlands.
- Joshua Tree National Park: Significant rainfall from the latest atmospheric river, with some areas receiving over an inch.
- Mojave National Preserve: Broad storm coverage and flood watches confirm widespread moisture across the preserve.
- Death Valley National Park: Over half an inch fell during the recent storm—an unusually strong start for one of the driest places in the U.S.
- Carrizo Plain: Approximately 1” of rain over the past 5 days—excellent early moisture for grasslands and valley floors.
- Palm Springs / Coachella Valley: More than an inch in the past week, including multiple days of showers.
Outlook:
If these early storms are followed by periodic winter rains, 2026 could be a noticeably stronger wildflower year than 2025, which was exceptionally poor across nearly all regions due to persistent drought and lack of germination moisture.
