2027 Desert Wildflower Forecast: Where and When Will the Flowers Bloom?

Desert Wildflowers Outlook 2026–2027

Updated October 2026

The 2026 desert wildflower season has ended, but we’re already watching the conditions that could shape the 2027 wildflower season.

One of the biggest factors we’re following is the developing El Niño in the tropical Pacific. A strong El Niño can influence winter storm patterns across California and the Southwest, but it does not guarantee a wet winter or a spectacular wildflower season.

For desert wildflowers, what happens next will be much more important: When will the first significant rains arrive, how much rain will fall, and will additional storms follow during the winter?

Fall rainfall can trigger dormant desert annual seeds to germinate. Those young plants then need additional moisture and favorable temperatures through the winter to survive and produce widespread spring flowers.

DesertUSA Is Starting the 2027 Season Early

This year, DesertUSA will begin following the wildflower season well before the first flowers appear.

During the fall and winter, we’ll be watching rainfall, storm timing, temperatures, early plant growth and reports from people in the field. We’ll follow conditions in Anza-Borrego, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, the Mojave Desert, Carrizo Plain, Arizona and other important desert wildflower areas.

Our Wildflower Bloom Calculator can help estimate when flowers may appear as conditions develop, and we’re also developing rainfall tracking information to help visitors follow the season from the first important storms through the spring bloom. We’ll update this page as conditions change.

Could 2027 Be a Great Wildflower Year?

It’s much too early to know. The ingredients for a good wildflower season have to come together in the right order. A promising Pacific weather pattern is only the beginning. The real story will be written by the rain that actually reaches the desert over the next several months.

DesertUSA will be following that story throughout the season. Follow the rain. Watch the desert turn green. Find the flowers. If you’re exploring the desert and see significant rain effects, new green growth, buds or early flowers, send us your photographs and observations. Reader reports have been an important part of DesertUSA’s wildflower coverage for many years.

Share Your Wildflower Photos & Reports with DesertUSA

Please share your wildflower pictures, including the date and location.  We will post your photos on our Wildflower Reports page, so others can learn where and when to view the spectacular displays. Note: Some photos may show invasive species like black mustard or wild radish, which are not native wildflowers. While colorful, they often crowd out native blooms and reflect poor ecological conditions.
