About the Trona Pinnacles
The Trona Pinnacles are over 500 spires of tufa rock rising from the Searles Dry Lake bed in the Mojave Desert. These formations were created underwater during the Ice Age, giving them their distinctive shape and eerie beauty.
Where Are the Trona Pinnacles Located?
They’re located about 7 miles southeast of Trona, California, and approximately 20 miles east of Ridgecrest. Access is via a graded dirt road (Pinnacles Road) off Highway 178.
Can You Camp There?
Yes. Camping is allowed and free, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The area offers no services, so bring water and pack out your trash. It’s a popular spot for stargazing and solitude.
Filming Location History
The Pinnacles have appeared in movies like Planet of the Apes, Star Trek V, Lost in Space, and Pitch Black. It’s often used to simulate alien planets due to its dramatic and barren look.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are the best seasons. Summer temperatures can exceed 110°F. The spires are most photogenic at sunrise and sunset.
