Little People
The Rock Art in Ocotillo Wells Sand Hills
Hidden in the sand dunes at Ocotillo Wells OHV park is a little known area called "Little People".
Over the years off-roaders have been building miniature rock monuments to honor their friends, and those who may no longer be able to enjoy the sand hills and adventures of ATVs, RZRs, and dirt bikes.
The memorial may have started as a single, simple rock monument to a friend, but it's turned into a sculpture garden of little people icons stretching over this small sandy valley. We visited the area in March of 2018 and were amazed to see hundreds of stone monuments there.
It's easy to see why people are drawn to create these little rock monuments – there's a large variety of rocks with different shapes to use. Some have added hats and other details to complete their works of art.
We didn't know if we would ever visit here again; so we built our own rock monument for DesertUSA, so we too would be immortalized in rock. There was a sand storm the first time we went though, so we did come back just a few weeks later.
A flag marks the area, making it easy to find. How long it will last is unknown.
